Phototherapy

Phototherapy

Bilirubin is a breakdown product of hemoglobin, which becomes soluble in water interacting with glucuronic acid in liver and comes out in bile. Some babys have a neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia, where the newborn’s liver is not able to properly process the bilirubin causing jaundice. In this case neuborns need a therapy, which reduces bilirubin. Phototherapy is the safest method as billirubin passes into water – soluble state through photochemical reaction and comes out in bile and urine.
